Avandia Lawyer - Diabetes Clinical Trial Halted Due to Deaths

February 7, 2008

The government announced Wednesday that the 10,000 patient ACCORD clinical trial involving diabetes treatment has been halted 18 months early due to increased risk of patients death. The trial was stopped after the Data Safety and Monitoring Board found that the rigorous treatment increased the patients’ risk of death by 25%.

The results bring into question the methods used of lowering blood sugar actually protects the heart and is very likely to call the safety of the diabetes drug Avandia into question, yet again.

  1. It’s worth reading about this study in more detail. Please point out that these folks all had type 2 diabetes. This is NOT a concern for anyone with type 1 diabetes.
Also everyone in the trial already were at risk for cardiovascular disease. There’s a lot more useful reading at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s question and answer page (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/prof/heart/other/accord/q_a.htm). This was the group that was conducting the trial.
Yes this is a concern, but I don’t think it’s as dramatic as your summary suggests.
I posted about this on my blog yesterday.

Thank You for the extra information Bernard. We try to get the FDA alrerts out ASAP for our readers. These are the FDA texts, not ours but if the FDA is warning on a product, it is usually a serious concern for patients.
    Your blog is very informative.
